Figures such as Pelé, Romário and Cristiano Ronaldo boast impressive numbers that border or exceed this mythical mark.
In this article we will delve deeper into the universe of these exceptional players and discover how they achieved a prominent place in the history of football.
Túlio Maravilha
The Brazilian striker has already worn the shirt of Botafogo and Corinthians. On his journey he tried to score more than 1000 hits until he turned 45 years old. By his accounts, the player claims to have achieved that number in 2014, playing for Araxá. But, according to official data, the number would be much lower, in the official count there are 578 in 34 clubs, and the Brazilian National Team.
Romário
“Baixinho” definitely had to be on our list. Considered by many to be one of the best Brazilian strikers in football history. During his time at Vasco da Gama he scored his most famous goals. Despite all his long trajectory, the official count points out that the number was only 747 hits scored.
Franz Binder
Franz “Bimbo” Binder was one of the most prolific strikers in football history, scoring over 1,000 goals in official matches.
He primarily played for SK Rapid Wien, where he became a club legend. His goal-scoring ability placed him among the greatest players of his era. After retiring, Binder continued contributing to football as a coach.
Ernst Wilimowski
His name might not sound familiar either, but he claimed to have scored 1000 hits throughout his career as a footballer. However, officially only 554 were registered. The most outstanding match of his career was in the 1938 World Cup in the round of 16 against Brazil. On that occasion, the player scored four goals.
Gerd Müller
This German striker was considered the greatest goalscorer in the history of the World Cup for 30 years. It is estimated that he scored 1461 in his entire career. The world champion for Bayern Munich, however, officially counts 735 goals.
Arthur Friedenreich
Just before Pelé, this Brazilian player claimed to have scored more than 1000 hits during his career. He was the first idol of the São Paulo fans and ended his career in 1935 at the age of 43 playing for Flamengo. Journalists at the time claim that he would have scored 1329 hits, but officially it is said that there were only 557.
Josef Bican
Theories of football in the Czech Republic claim that without a doubt this player was the best scorer of all timewith a good advantage over Pelé. It is said that for 27 years (1928-1955) he would have scored 5000 hits. However, official data state that it was only 518 in 341 games.
What does this “official count” mean?
In Europe, generally only goals scored in official matches count towards a player’s tally, not including friendlies or club training matches.
This has caused intense debate, as in the case of Pelé, whose goal tally exceeding one thousand is questioned due to goals scored in friendlies and regional teams.
Regardless, Pelé is recognized as an exceptional player who left his mark on football history.
